Entry 1_Nguyễn Thế Tuyên

Entry 1: Capturing the Message

ITEM 1: Cartoon

Rhetorical devices:
Metaphor:
-The ship = the human beings in general and the world leaders in particular

-The huge iceberg = the mass destructions of the climate change

Overstatement:
-The potentially catastrophic disaster of the climate change

Message:
Human beings are going to be on the verge of perishing due to the disastrous effects of climate change. Despite the fact that world leaders are aware of this , they have not yet reached an agreement on taking a course of action to tackle it.

ITEM 2: Story

The Wise Old Man

A wealthy man requested an old scholar to wean his son away from his bad habits. The scholar took the youth for a stroll through a garden. Stopping suddenly he asked the boy to pull out a tiny plant growing there.
The youth held the plant between his thumb and forefinger and pulled it out. The old man then asked him to pull out a slightly bigger plant. The youth pulled hard and the plant came out, roots and all. “Now pull out that one,” said the old man pointing to a bush. The boy had to use all his strength to pull it out.
“Now take this one out,” said the old man, indicating a guava tree. The youth grasped the trunk and tried to pull it out. But it would not budge. “It’s impossible,” said the boy, panting with the effort.
“So it is with bad habits,” said the sage. “When they are young it is easy to pull them out but when they take hold they cannot be uprooted.”
The session with the old man changed the boy’s life.

Rhetorical devices:

Metaphor:
-a tiny plant, a slightly bigger plant, a bush , a guava tree =people’s bad habits.
-Pulling these plants out: giving up the bad habits

Message:
The bad habits grow up in a person like trees. In other words, the longer they exist in the person, the greater effects they have on him as well as the more difficult he finds to get out of them. Therefore, he had better break himself of them as soon as possible.

ITEM 3: Cartoon

-Symbol: the flag on the man’s head = the USA, the man= the USA army forces
-Metaphor: 4 pillars = 4 places when the USA army forces are distributing

Message:
The USA army forces are trying hard to tackle problems in these places; however, these problems are in a state of going to be uncontrollable.

  2. In general, your entry is OK but I think that you should add one thing about the rhetorical device of the first item. it is antithesis, let's look at the iceberg and the ship!

  3. in the item 3, i think the message you concluded is not enough. in terms of helping the 4 places to tackle their problems, The USA are trying hard to put its nose on the places' internal problems in order that it can take advantages of these countries.

  4. i like the topic u give in your entry.they are really hot and up-to-date.besides i would like to give some my comments:
    item 1: in my opinion
item 3: i think that the message is that the USA state is skilling themself and it is the warriors that are the targets instead of government,so stop war is the best way!

  5. First of all, your entry is very clear and easy to follow.
Secondly, I like the picture 1 most.It makes me look back on the film "Titanic". If the leaders don't solve the climate change, the ship will be stabbed and sunk.It means the Earth will be destroyed.
    Thanks for your entry!!!
