Item 1: Cartoon

Rhetorical devices:

  • Simile: prices - a huge wave; wages – a fragile flag.
  • Overstatement.
  • Antithesis: the enormity of the wave versus the fragility of the flag and people’s small appearance.
  • Symbol: price wave – inflation.

Message: Inflation is a killer who hurts everyone.

Item 2: Story

The kind and the peace contest

There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried and submitted their work. The king looked at all the pictures. There were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them.
One picture was of a calm lake, perfectly mirroring the peaceful, towering mountains all around it. Overhead was blue sky with fluffy, white clouds. It was the favorite of all who saw it. Truly, they thought, it was the perfect picture of peace.
The other picture had mountains, too, but these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky from which rain fell and in which lightening played. Down the side of one mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. A less peaceful picture would be difficult to imagine. But when the king looked closely, he saw beside the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest in perfect peace.
Which picture would you have selected? The king chose the second picture. Do you know why?
“Because,” explained the king, “peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all these things and still be calm in your heart. This is the real meaning of peace.”

Rhetorical devices:

  • Chiasmus: “… sat the mother bird on her nest in perfect peace…”

  • Antithesis: the portrait of two picture: blue sky & angry sky, etc.
  • Comparison: the peaceful level of each picture “A less peaceful picture…”

Message: Let’s be peaceful in your own soul and heart! That is real peace.

Item 3: Poem

Lovesick Even

Xuan Dieu

Translator: Thomas D. Le

This cold day the sun goes to bed early.
I miss you, dear, I miss you so.
Nothing sadder than a still eve
When gloam mixes with the last rays.
The dragging wind glides o'er the tangled grass
Amid snippets of night darkly hiding among the limbs.
The clouds follow their birds to green mountains
In flocks and rows silent in unison
While gray skies nigh dissolve into moist tears.

It's over now! What's left, my dear?
It's over now! no wind through loft nor moon on porch
With dewy leaves falling on our heads bound.
No more jealousy or anger or spite
(What a bliss to be mad at each other!)
Now 'lone, I hear the whole even
Seeping slowly into my lonely soul.

I miss your voice, your figure, your image.
I miss you, dear, oh how I miss you, dear!
And I recall those days so far away.
I miss your lips that smiled in country far
And eyes on me that filled with passion deep.
My dear, come close! Give me your hand!
O wind, thy gusts that brought me memories!
O memories, what good thou call'st me for?

Rhetorical devices:

  • Personalizing: The sun is personalized to go to bed.
  • Repetition: + structure: I miss you, It's over now, etc.

+ word: miss, etc

  • Rhetorical question: “ what good thou call'st me for? ”
  • Comparison: “Nothing sadder than a still eve”.
  • Exclamation mark.

Message: Lovesick is a specific symbol of love. Xuan Dieu has brought a new definition of lovesick. Nostalgia of love makes the meaning of lovesick full. Love do not just remember his lover such as her voice, images, etc but when living in that deeply nostalgia, man also remembers himself “And I recall those days so far away” . That is when human beings lived in the best part of the man with many great ambitions, confidence in themselves, belief in love and life.

  3. I’m deeply interested in ur first and second item.
Let’s look at the first one, it reflects the real situation in our society, inflation is killing us hour by hour. How can we exist in this raising price period?
The second one, a meaning full poem. I’m fond of ur hidden message and the sentence:"peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work"
Now, the last item, so many new words but a great poem about love:x: Oh right, lovesick is indescribe feelings, isn’t it?
Try to improve ur font mistakes in the next entry.
