Entry 1 Item 1 : Poem
Value Of Time [1] |
~Seema Chowdhury ~
|
| Time is precious don't let it pass by |
Rhetorical devices:
Ø Simile : Time – water
Time – money
Ø Repetition: The last paragraph is the repetition of the first one.
Repetition of grammatical structure:
Time is + ............ , don’t let it + .......... So be + adj & Verb + some
Ø Inversion : so be + ......
Moreover, adjectives ( strong, quick, wise)after “ So be” belong to one group of vocabulary, verbs (hold, keep, grasp) belong to one group of vocabulary which expresses the act of people to take something in their hand.
Ø Parallelism : give some - take some
Use some - gain some
Give some – gain some
Message : Time is valuable. We must appreciate time, because “Time is free, but it’s priceless. you can’t own it, but you can use it. You can keep it but you can spend it. Once you have lost it, you can never got it back” ( Harvey Mackay)
Item 2: Story
Stories of two notes [2]
A US $1 note met a US $ 20 note. The US 1 $ note asked:
- Hey, my friend. Where have you been since our last meet?
- Oh, I have been in a lot of places: casinos, coffee shops, horse – race gambles... I have just back from traveling in Europe. And now I am in American. And you?
- You know already! I have traveled in charity boxes, churches and orphanages....
Rhetorical devices:
Ø metaphor: A US $ 1 note and a US $ 20 note represent the give and take.
- A US 1 $ note: what people “ give” – what they spend for other people on public and social activities such as charity..
- A US 20 $ note: what people “ take” – What they spend for themselves on individual purposes to satisfy their desire
Ø contrast: $1 > < $ 20
Low, small value High, big value
There is a contrast between places:
| Casinos, coffee shops, horse-race gambles | > < | charity boxes, churches, orphanages |
| Luxurious places for recreation, where satisfy human desire. | organization for humanity |
Message: people seem to be quite selfish when they spend too much on private desire but too little on humanity activities. The life needs give and take. We should give more and more to express our humanity instead of wasting money on unnecessary recreation.
Item 3: Cartoon
[3]
Rhetorical devices:
Ø Metonymy: A withering tree – Forest being destroyed
Axes – The deforestation of human beings
Ø Overstatement: There are too many axes in only one tree.
The last leaf leaves the tree &those axes replace the position of leaves
ð In the tree, leaves turn into axes.
Message: Human beings are deforesting seriously. This destruction may lead to the extermination of nature because it is seemed that our fragile forest, fragile nature can’t stand the human formidable devastation anymore. We must protect our forest from being destroyed.

your organization is really good. I like the cartoon best, very attractive!
Trả lờiXóaYour entry is very interesting. However, It would be better if you take some attention to my suggests :)
Trả lờiXóaItem 1:I find "dry-cry", "fly-cry","some-some",therefore, it should be "rhyme"
Item 2:your analysis is very clear and careful. Well done!
Item 3: This cartoon also includes :
+metaphor: the loosing of green which cover the earth face because of the deforestation.
Wish you have better one!
I like your entry a lot. After reading your entry, i can learn many meaningful lessons such as:valuable time, protecting our forest from being destroyed....Moreover, you are very creative when you use Harvey Mackay's famous quotation. Well-done.
Trả lờiXóaHowever,i have some ideas:
+ Item 1: i have the same idea with Van Anh, you should add "rhyme"(dry-cry, fly-cry, some-some). Message: we need to treasure the valuable time and find the best way to adjust it.
Your entry is quite good.I like it and I can learn some valuable things such as be unselfish and appreciate time. However,I have some comments for your entry. In the item 1,I do not think that inversion is one of the rhetorical devices in the poem.I also add repetition of the whole sentence(For once it's gone, there's nothing but to cry) and rhyme(dry-cry-fly).
