Entry 1
Item 1: Poem
The Road Not Taken [1]
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference
Robert Frost (1915)
Rhetorical devices:
1. Rhyme: wood – stood, fair – wear , day – way, I – by, etc.
2. Metaphor
· “two roads”: personal choices
· “took the other”: making choices few other people had made
· “grassy and wanted”: the choices which many people choose.
3. Antithesis: When the traveler comes to the fork in the road, he wishes he could travel both.
Item 2: Cartoon [2]
1. Overstatement: A city with full of smog, cars and factories.
2. Metonymy: the talking tree – enviroment
Message: Everyday, human being is destroying the enviroment by polluting the air with smog, poisoned gases, etc without any sense of cognitive. They do not seem to care about this problem.
Item 3: Story
Where to make effort? [3]
EVER HEAR THE STORY of the giant ship engine that failed? The ship’s owners tried one expert after another, but none of them could figure out how to fix the engine. Then they brought in an old man who had been fixing ships since he was a youngster. He carried a large bag of tools with him, and when he arrived, he immediately went to work. He inspected the engine very carefully, top to bottom. Two of the ship’s owners were there, watching this man, hoping he would know what to do. After looking things over, the old man reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something. Instantly, the engine lurched into life. He carefully put his hammer away. The engine was fixed!
A week later, the owners received a bill from the old man for ten thousand dollars.
“What?!” the owners exclaimed. “He hardly did anything!” So they wrote the old man a note saying, “Please send us an itemized bill.”
The man sent a bill that read:
Tapping with a hammer............$2
Knowing where to tap...............$9998
Rhetorical devices:
Metaphor
- giant ship engine that failed:success that everyone wants to archive
- where the old man tapped on the ship: where we put our effort in
Message: Effort is important, but knowing where to make an effort in your life makes all the difference.

About the third rhetorical device of the first item, i don't think that's an Antithesis
Trả lờiXóaBesides, i think you should change "Rherotical" into "Rhetorical Devices"
I like your simple story and the meaning you found out (last item). But about the first sentence,i wonder if it is a rhetorical question and why you put some first words in bold.
The way you arrange the items and present all of them make your post look clearly and easy to follow.
Trả lờiXóaItem 1: You chose a meaningful poem and had a good message, :D. I found some other rhetorical devices.
Trả lờiXóa# Metaphor:
The fork in the road (the decisions one must make in life)
The roads (different paths in life)
The undergrowth (the uncertainty present choices will have on the future)
The less traveled road (the path not accepted by society).
I think "grassy and wanted wear" describes that the road is not often used
# Repetition: way – way (way leads on to way – line 14); I – I (line 18-19)
Thanks for your entry!^^
I agree with Nguyen Thi Thu Ha and Hoang Thi Thu. I really like your entry, especially the third item with the meaning full message. However, I suppose that it has another message: " we must respect and appreciate the others effort." :):)
Trả lờiXóai am really impressed by your entry especially the poem " the road not taken". thank to you, i know this meaning masterpiece. i have some opinion about rhetorical devices of this poem:
Trả lờiXóalike Thư i think grassy and wanted wear" describes a "less traveled" (meaning less popular) road. The Road Not Taken" seems to illustrate that once one takes a certain road, there is no turning back, although one might change paths later on, they still can not change the past and it is too late. i think the poem is a declaration of independent and personal freedom.
I like all ur three messages, they are so meaningfull. I totally changed my point of view when I read item 1. The road, which has many people travel by, is also the place you find less oppotunity. Just take another journey!
Trả lờiXóaItem 3 seems to wake me up. I wonder sometimes, Why I try my best but the results are not like I expect. Maybe I put my effort in wrong way?
