Entry 1_Hoàng Thị Thư

Item 1: Story

Eagle, Crow and the Shepherd.

Some sheep were grazing in the field. Suddenly, an eagle swooped down, sank his claws into a young lamb and carried it off. A crow saw this and wanted some meat as well.
"That's as easy as pie”, she said. “I’ll do it too, only better. The eagle's stupid, he took a small lamb, but I'll choose the fat ram over there.”
The crow sank her claws into the ram's wool. She wanted to lift it but could not. Nor could she pull her claws out of the ram's coat .The shepherd came up, pulled the crow's feet out of the fleece, killed her and left her there.

(Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy)

Rhetorical devices:

Ø Metaphor: eagle (clever person who knows about his power); small lamb (suitable target); crow (greedy dumbbell); fat ram (thing’s beyond ability)

Ø Antithesis: small lamb - fat ram

Ø Simile: “That’s as easy as pie”

Irony:

o The crow was stupid and overconfident to think that she could catch a big prey. Therefore, she fell into a tragedy.

Message:

Not being aware of our own strengths and weaknesses, we’ll have no good results. We should estimate our own capacity to be well-prepared for any unexpected situation that may occur to achieve goals in life.

Item 2: Cartoon

Rhetorical devices:

Ø Metaphor:

o The octopus, the cock and the snake (China)

o The S shape, the hen (Vietnam)

Ø Irony:

The octopus and the cock behave as if they were very friendly and kind. In fact, they are not. In the first picture, the octopus is rolling its tentacles up to get Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagoes. It is closing an eye as if it were flirting. The left eye is opening to observe the situation around. Similarly, in the second picture, inside the cock, there is a dangerous snake intending to attack the small hen.

Message:

China is dangerous and villainous. In diplomatic relationships with China, Vietnam must be very cautious to maintain the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.

Item 3: Poem

A Poison Tree

(William Blake)

I was angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.

And I watered it in fears
Night and morning with my tears,
And I sunned it with smiles
And with soft deceitful wiles.

And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright,
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine -

And into my garden stole
When the night had veiled the pole;
In the morning, glad, I see
My foe outstretched beneath the tree..

Rhetorical devices:

Ø Rhyme: friend – end; foe – grow; fears – tears; smiles – wiles; …

Ø Metaphor: the poison tree (the speaker’s anger); the growth of the poison tree (the growth of the speaker’s anger); an apple bright (the apple on the forbidden Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden) (*)

Ø Overstatement: And I watered it in fears/ Night and morning with my tears (we can't water anything with tears, we need large amounts of water for watering)

Ø Repetition: I was angry with…; I told…; And…And…

Message:

Building up anger inside of you is not good for the soul. When you are honest with someone about your feelings, the anger inside of you dies away. In return, this honesty leads to the death of a foe and the birth of a friend.

(*) That fruit seems as if it would offer a world of good, but in the Judeo-Christian story, it actually offers a world of woe. The relation of the angry speaker to his foe comes to stand for the story of an angry god and humankind.
