Entry 1_Phạm Thị Hòa

Entry 1

Item 1: Cartoon

Rhetorical devices:
• Overstatement: “one single breath kills you”
• Rhyme: kills-fills; place-late-face.
Message:
Air pollution is now a big deal that seriously affects human’s life. Unless there are changes truly take place, life on earth will soon come to an end.

Item 2: Poem

If you think you can, you can

You can be a total winner, even if you're a beginner
If you think you can you can, if you think you can you can
You can wear the gold medallion, you can ride your own black stallion
If you think you can you can, if you think you can you can
It's not your talent or the gifted birth
It's not your bank book that determines worth
It isn't in your gender or the color of your skin
It's your attitude that lets you win
You can live with "coulds" or "shoulds," or be like Tiger Woods
If you think you can you can, if you think you can you can
Even if you're hesitant, you can be a woman president
If you think you can you can, if you think you can you can
It doesn't matter what you've done before
It makes no difference what's the halftime score
It's never over 'til the final gun
So keep on trying and you'll find you've won
Just grab your dream and then believe it
Go out and work, and you'll achieve it
If you think you can, you can
If you think you can, you can
(Denis Waitley)
Rhetorical devices:
• Repetition: “if you think you can, you can”,
• Rhyme: winner-beginner; medallion-stallion; birth-worth, skin-win; coulds-shoulds-Woods; hesitant-president; before-score; gun-won; believe-achieve.
• Antithesis: "total winner-beginner"; "you can live with "coulds" and "shoulds", or be like Tiger Woods"; "hesitant-a woman president";
• Metaphor:
1. “beginner”, “hesitant”: our real life
2. “a total winner”, “wear the gold medallion”, “ride your own black “stallion”, “a woman president”: our dreams.
3. “final gun”: the end
Message:
Dreams and belief have a great influence on your life. So, grab a dream, believe in yourself, make efforts until the last second, and then the magic appears: your dream comes true.

Item 3: Cartoon

Rhetorical devices:
• Overstatement: the image of a cranky, painful and miserable earth.
• Metaphor: the earth: human beings and all other types of life in the world.
Message:
Life on the world is being threatened because of global warming.

  1. Hey buddy,
Your entry is rather good. I really love the cartoon 1 having great meaning in the funny sketch. Besides, the poem is good^^.
However, there something you fix and complement.
    - i think in ur poem, "medallion- stallion" should be alliteration.
    - in cartoon 2, there isn't overstatement. It has just metaphor. The earth- life in the world; the thermometer- alerting, dangerous situation.
    - Why did you choose two cartoons as two items? We should have 3 different ones.

  2. I like the cartoon in Item 1 very much. It is very funny and you analyze it well.
Item 2 is a meaningful story
Item 3:I have different idea. I don't think the earth here represents human beings and life on this planet. It's just about global warming.

  3. i quite impress on your entry, especially the third and second items about the environment with image of our earth like a seriously ill person. it is fact that polution and global warming are having great influence on people, many animals, plants and all surviving on the earth.the earth is heating up day by day.it's high time people did somthing to stop them before it is too late. the second is meaningfull. i also think the first item there is overstatement" it maybe too late

  4. In general, your three items are very good. However, I still have some commnents.
    Item 2:
Rhyme: birth - worth, skin - win, before - score
Item 3: I agree with Cuc that this picture only shows the rise in the average temperature of Earth, what we call "global warming".
