Entry 1_ Nguyễn Hoài Nam
ITEM 1: A short story
A contractor, who had made a fortune building homes, told his
supervisor of 35 years, “I’m going to build one last house and you will
build it for me coz, I'll be gone for a year. Use the best material --
money is no consideration. Make it the greatest house we've ever
built "having given these instructions, the man left.
The supervisor thought that this was a great opportunity to make a
fortune. He used the cheapest material inside but made the house look
beautiful from outside. After a year, the contractor returned, he
inspected the house and asked the supervisor what he thought of the
house.
The supervisor replied “it’s the best house I've ever built”
The contractor handed over the deed to him and said "This is my parting gift to you”.
Rhetorical devices:
- Climax: The contractor handed over the deed to him and said "This is my parting gift to you”.
Message: We should develop a high standard of personal ethics and always do the right things, even if no one is watching us.
ITEM 2: Picture
Rhetorical devices:
- Overstatement: overpopulation in the Earth.
- Metaphor: terrestrial globe – the lack of living places.
- Irony: The unique solution.
Message: the population in the world is increasing very fast, which causes many problems, especially is the lack of living places. This is a warning to everyone.
ITEM 3: Story
The Boy & the apple Tree
A long time ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it everyday. He climbed to the treetop, ate the apples, took a nap under the shadow…he loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him. Time went by…the little boy had grown up and he no longer played around the tree every day.
One day, the boy came back to the tree and he looked sad. "Come and play with me” the tree asked the boy. "I am no longer a kid, I do not play around trees any more” the boy replied.
“I want toys. I need money to buy them.” “Sorry, but I do not have money… but you can pick all my apples and sell them. So, you will have money.” The boy was so excited. He grabbed all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy never came back after he picked the apples. The tree was sad.
One day, the boy who now turned into a man returned and the tree was excited “Come and play with me” the tree said. “I do not have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?” “Sorry, but I do not have any house. But you can chop off my branches to build your house.” So the man cut all the branches of the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy but the man never came back since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.
One hot summer day, the man returned and the tree was delighted. "Come and play with me!” the tree said. “I am getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?” said the man. "Use my trunk to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy.” So the man cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and never showed up for a long time.
Finally, the man returned after many years."Sorry, my boy. But I do not have anything for you anymore. No more apples for you …” the tree said. "No problem, I do not have any teeth to bite" the man replied. "No more trunk for you to climb on” “I am too old for that now” the man said. "I really cannot give you anything... the only thing left is my dying roots” the tree said with tears. "I do not need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years” the man replied. "Good! Old tree roots are the best place to lean on and rest, Come, come and sit down with me and rest.” The man sat down and the tree was glad and smiled with tears…
Rhetorical devices:
Repetition: "Come and play with me”, “I want”, “sad”
Metaphor: the apple tree – your parent, the boy – you.
Message: Our parents are always like this tree. They all want us to be happy and be around them. We need to try our best not to cause mistakes which make our parents sad. However, sometime we do not understand them or maybe they do not understand us. Hopefully, all parents and their kids could understand each other.

Overall, your entry is good, ^^. Below is my personal suggestion you can consider to make your entry better.
Trả lờiXóaItem 1:
Rhetorical devices:
Metaphor:
The building (the result and reward for our work)
Mesage:
We must be honest and responsible for our asigned work.
Item 3
Metaphor:
The apples, branches, trunk the apple tree gives the boy (the time, care and love your parents give you)
Message:
The story gives us a lesson of understanding, love and gratitude. Our parents give us all of what they have but we forget that great sacrifice. In the end, when we feel tired and dispirited, and have no strength to run after our individual desires any more, parents are still home for us to rely on. Don’t hesitate to let your beloved ones know that how much they mean to you and how much you love them, because it could be that last chance for you to do so.
I like your entry, in item 2, I think the overstatement : the equator is devating and falling.
Trả lờiXóaIn general, I like your entry very much. It brings many valuable lessons about the life such as:the resposibility for our action,.. The format is easy for reader to follow. However, I have some supplementary ideas:
Trả lờiXóa+, Item 1: I agree with Thu that you should add metaphor devices.
+, Item 2: In the picture, the Earth is falling because of human's pulling. It means we are destroying our life in our big house
+, Item 3: I draw a lesson: Sometimes, we are so indifferent to realize our parents'sacrifice. We only know to receive good things from parents but we forget that we have responsibity to take care of them. Do you think that we need to do something before it is too late.
It can be said that your entry is good. I found something special and attractive in your entry, so I would like to share more about it.
Trả lờiXóa+ Item 1: I share the same idea with Hoang Thu that there is metaphor here; the building represents the result and the reward of people. This story contains a meaningful moral lesson about attitude to work, honesty and responsibility of people. I like this story very much!
+ Item 2: From my view, there is no irony in this cartoon because, as you can see, there is not any contrast between the expected and the actual. The only contrast I can find here is that A half of the earth is full of people, and the other half is contrary. This is the contrast in normal meaning, not irony. And with the contrast I just show you, I think, one more message is the different population between different areas. Most of People live in city, make city become too populous and increase the challenge to be able to survive in the city. Who can suffer from those challenge will be out.
+ Item 3: A moving story!! The author personalizes a tree; makes it look like a human. That’s so great. The moral lesson of this story is really meaningful, too.
I am really impressed with your first and third item. They are full of meaning!
Trả lờiXóaI agree with Thu and Hang's comments for your first and second item. Besides, I also want to add my idea.
Item 3:
Message: Everybody has Apple Trees in our life, and they are our parents. No matter how busy you are, don't forget to show our love and gratitude to our parents and people who care for us. Don’t wait until it is too late.
