Item 1: Poem

Human hearts

Honest hearts having hours of

hope, harmony and health

Heartbroken hearts happen to

handle hurtful hours

Hostile hearts holding

hate, hopelessness and harm

Helpful hearts helping

humankind hit happiness

Hilarious hearts having

hassle- free happy hours

v Rhetorical devices:

· Alliteration: almost all words in the poem begin with the consonant “h” (underlined above)

· Metonymy: hearts ~ people; hours ~ lifetime.

· Repetition: Adj + hearts + V

v Message: Our attitude decides our life.

Item 2: Story

Two seeds

Two seeds lay side by side in the fertile soil.

The first seed said, “I want to grow! I want to send my roots deep into the soil beneath me, and thrust my sprouts through the earth's crust above me...I want to unfurl my tender

buds like banners to announce the arrival of spring … I want to feel the warmth of the sun on my face and the blessing of the morning dew on my petals!”

And so she grew...

The second seed said, “Hmmmm. If I send my roots into the ground below, I don’t know what I will encounter in the dark. If I push my way through the hard soil above me I may damage my delicate sprouts … what if I let my buds open and a snail tries

to eat them? And if I were to open my blossoms, a small child may pull me from the ground. No, it is much better for me to wait until it is safe.”

And so she waited…

A yard hen scratching around in the early spring ground for food found the waiting seed and promptly ate it.

v Rhetorical devices:

Metaphor:

· Two seeds ~ two kinds of people ( one is optimistic, active and dedicated; another is pessimistic, passive and selfish)

· Process of plant’s life ~ human’s life.

v Message:

When you look on the bright side of life, there are many opportunities opening to you. And,when you give more than take and have an intensive determination, your dreams will come true.

Item 3: Picture

v Rhetorical devices:

· Metaphor:

Ants ~ human beings (little ants: the poor; big ant: the rich)

Barley ~ wealth

Hill: social status

· Paradox: One big ant possesses branches of barley while many little ants have only a piece of barley.

v Message:

All for one, one for all. There is a non- equitable distribution of wealth in the world.

  1. here is opinion about your entry:
in general, your entry is good, but there are some thing should be added:
Item 1: the rhetorical: parallelism (hostiles heart holding // helpful hearts helping) and rhyme ( helping- having- holding)

  2. I appreciate your entry very much. The poem is very interesting. I agree with Xuyen that there is parallelism, but I dont think rhyme is appropriate here.
Item 2 is a good story. however, I don't totally agree with the message. If I were you, I wouldn't think of "give and take". In my opinion, it is about determination and courage to realize your dream.
Item 3 impresses me most. it is the best part of your entry
    well done!

  3. I like your entry very much. I think you have done it hard and effectively. Now, I give you some comment about your job:
Item 1:It is an interesting poem. In my opinion, there is still parallelism. I don’t think there is rhyme like Cuc’ comment
Item 3: I like this story. You have done very well!
