Entry 4: Argument Structures and Fallacies

Item 1: ‘‘Maggi” advertisement.

ANALYSIS: It is a valid but not sound argument

Content fallacy:

1. Fallacy of relevance (weak analogy):

“Men usually like eating in the restaurant because in the restaurant, the chief use the Maggi to make tasty dishes. If wives want their husbands eating with them at home, they must use the maggi to cook meal”.

This is a weak analogy. In fact, delicious dishes are not the major reason why men are keen on eating in the restaurant. Most of men like eating in the restaurant because they want to drink freely with their friends.

2. Fallacy of necessary and sufficient of conditions:

The argument:

Well-cooked dishes attract men

Using MAGGI will make delicious dishes

Therefore, the women who use Maggi to cook meals will attract their husbands

In term of structure, the argument is valid. However, the 1^st premise is not really persuasive. Actually, a wife with good cooking skills is just a necessary condition, not a sufficient one, to attract her husband.

Item 2: Quanh nghi án U23 Việt Nam bán độ tại SEA Games 26

Một tờ báo thậm chí đã bóng gió nghi ngờ tiền vệ Trọng Hoàng đá hỏng quả penalty cẩu thả ở những phút cuối là do bán độ: "tính toán để trận đấu kết thúc với tỷ số 2-1". Trong lúc Văn Thắng bất ngờ ghi bàn ấn định tỷ số 3-1 ở phút bù giờ, Văn Quyết và nhiều cầu thủ khác của đội tuyển đã không chạy lại chia vui cùng anh mà bộc lộ tâm trạng rất khác thường. Theo tìm hiểu của PV Báo GĐ&XH thì trong ngày hôm đó, kèo độ mà các nhà cái quốc tế ra U23 Việt Nam chấp U23 Lào từ 2 đến 2 trái rưỡi. Trong khi độ "tài, xỉu" là 3,5. Nghĩa là nếu trận đấu kết thúc cùng tỷ số 2-1, những người đặt cửa U23 Việt Nam và "tài" sẽ mất trắng.

Cũng vì giả thiết này mà cho đến hôm qua (24/11), hàng loạt diễn đàn mạng và nhiều tờ báo tiếp tục đặt ra nghi ngờ: Văn Thắng đã khiến nhiều đồng đội của anh bị "bể kèo". Những chứng cứ khác cũng tiếp tục đưa ra, làm cho cộng đồng mạng "sôi sùng sục". Một chuyên gia bóng đá lão làng thậm chí còn nói thẳng: "Nếu không tiêu cực thì không biết phải lý giải trận đấu đó theo cách nào. Có nhiều tình huống mà ngay cầu thủ nghiệp dư cũng biết di chuyển như thế là tối kỵ nhưng cầu thủ U23 vẫn mắc phải. Trong khi đó, hàng thủ hầu như đứng yên nhìn đối phương ghi bàn".

ANALYSIS:

Post-hoc fallacy (false premise): In this above article, the author says that some football players in U23 Vietnam team have fraudulent acts. However, the evidences which author shows are not very convincing: In a match, Trong Hoang misses the penalty; some footballers are not happy when Van Thang scores; the others have amateur soccer styles. Actually, the footballer cannot perform excellently all the time. Because of their ill health or objective conditions, they can play badly.

Appeal to popularity: The author use "hàng loạt diễn đàn mạng và nhiều tờ báo " to persuade readers that the information he is giving is convincing.
