entry 4_Nguyen Thi Hong Lien

Argument structures and fallacies

Item 1:

Rằng tôi chút phận đàn bà

Ghen tuông thì cũng người ta thường tình

(Truyện Kiều –Nguyễn Du)

- Analysis: Argument structure:

Premise 1: Đàn bà thường hay ghen

Premise 2: Tôi là đàn bà

Conclusion: Tôi ghen

- Argument fallacy:

In these two poem sentences, Hoan Thu argues that she is a woman, and women are often jealous in love, therefore she is jealous is a common thing. However, her argument has bias that women are jealous, but in reality not all most of women are jealous. This argument is appeal to popularity.

Some S are P

a is S

Therefore, a is P

  1. Dear Lien,
After reading your entry, I would like to give you some comments. I think, there is weak analogy in your item. Tn term of structure, the argument is valid. However, the first premise is unsound. Actually, there are many women who are not jealous.

  2. Dear Lien,
After reading your entry carefully, I have some comments for you.
First of all, I agree with you that the argument here is valid but unsound (because the first premise “almost all women are jealous” is not convincing). I share the same opinion that it consists of content fallacy : fallacy of relevance (appear to popularity). However, I do not agree with you about the structure of the argument. I think it is :
    Almost all S is P
    A is S
    ____________________________
    Therefore A is P
    Not
    Some S is P
    A is S
    _____________________________
    Therefore A is P

Hope that you will reconsider it and make your entry better! ^^

  3. dear Liên!
i give some comments for your entry
i totally agree with Hoa. Hoan Thu's argument is valid beause the 1st premise: đàn bà ghen tuông là chuyện bình thường=> almost all S are P
tôi cũng là đàn bà : a is P
    therefore a is S
