Identifying bias

Item 1:

(Source: http://vnexpress.net/gl/doi-song/2010/07/3ba1d9ef/)

Type of bias: Stereotype

Analyse:

It is a vote for son and daughter. We can see in the vote, it is nearly a half of voter want to have at least a son.

Most of people longs to have a son in family to keep his race alive. Especially in Vietnam, almost all people want a son first and daughter second. In their mind, son will live with them until their last breath while daughter must follow the husband. Because of this thinking, men always have to deal with hard situations and appear more power.

Item 2:

Type of bias: Stereotype, Prejudice.

Analysis:

Victoria Covie gets grade 162 in an IQ exam while the score of Einstein is160; therefore, people consider her as an intelligent person and more intelligent than Einstein.

In fact, intelligence is a very complicated concept and it cannot be measured by some lists of questions. Furthermore, the real metal power can change; it depends on the confidence, spiritual state, health and language. For many people, the image of someone with a high IQ mark is an intelligent person (stereotype). Then, when someone gets a high IQ mark, people judge: “Oh, he/she is really intelligent” and vice versa (Prejudice). In addition, people also judge that someone with a higher IQ mark is more intelligent than others with a lower IQ mark (Prejudice). It is ridiculous when we evaluate other intelligent levels basing on IQ test only.

Item 3:

(Source: http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/d/discrimination.asp)

Type of bias: Discrimination

Analyse:

There are two men sitting around a table. The white looks polite and sits in the clean and modern half while the black is untidy and sit in dilapidated one. The black guy looks so shy and miserable, vice versa the fat while man is full of majesty.

Color discrimination can occur between persons of different races or ethnicities, or between persons of the same race or ethnicity. Here, we see clearly the existance of discrimination. Coloured people are behaved in unfavarable way in comparision with the others.

  1. In general, your entry is quite good. i like your items, they are very interesting. And here are some comments for your entry:
+ Item 1: I think that there are discrimination in this item because. As we can see in the above statistics board, people vote for bearing sons more than bearing daughter. It means that people attach much importance to sons than daughter, and the action shows that is the statistics voting for son is biggest.
+ Item 2: i don't think that there are prejudice and Stereotype here. In my opinion, the kind of bias in the item 2 is assumption. we can see in this item, the author just bases on the number of IQ marks that Victoria Covie gains in order to conclude that she is more intelligent than Albert Einstein. It is not exact because one's intelligence should be measured by the concrete achievements they obtained in reality, not just by the result of the IQ test.

  2. Hi Ly, here are my comments for your entry.
In item 1: This survey is only carried out among men and with 2879 men. It is not presentative of large population; threfore, I think it should be assumption here.
    Item 2. I agree with Huong's explaination.
    Item 3. Nice job

  3. dear Ly. i find your entry interesting and worth reading. i want to share some comments.
item 1: In my opinion, it should be prejudice because 45,7 % of the voter said that they wanted at least a son. it means that they not only respected male more than female (stereotype), but also wanted this stereotype become reality.
    item 2: it is assumption.
    item 3: well-done.
