Item 1: Open car door damages vehicle
Maria Sprow; The Michigan Daily 3/27/03
“Two vehicles sustained damages Tuesday afternoon - one while parked at the main entrance circle drive to Taubman Health Care Center and the other while attempting to pass by the parked vehicle. According to Department of Public Safety reports, the occupant of the first vehicle opened a car door as the other vehicle was passing, hitting it. There were no injuries in the accident.”
Type of bias: Assumption
Analysis: The headline is very limited and based on little knowledge of the fact. Because the owner of the first car opened its door when the second one was passing, the accident happens for sure. The headline makes readers think that opening the car door can make the car damaged. However, if that assumption is exact, who dare to get in or get out of the car?
Item 2:
Type of bias: Discrimination on men and women.
Analysis: The discrimination against women is supposedly a thing of the part. However, the truth is that women, on average, still earn less than men.
Item 3:
Type of bias: Scapegoating
Analysis: In this extract from an article, the author expresses her hatred for the girls coming from provinces outside of Hanoi. She not only has a prejudice towards these girls that they are cleverer, cunning, and capable but also blames them for coming to Hanoi and taking the Hanoi men. This is very irrational because there are many reasons why many Hanoi guys pick the girls from other areas instead of Hanoi. The most important thing is that, they know the origin does not matter. Instead, the way of behaving, living, and treating of the girls others is the precious thing.

I have some comments for your entry.
Trả lờiXóa- Item 1: I think it's OK.
- Item 2: I agree with you that the item is discrimination. However, I think you should make your analysis clearer.
- Item 3: Personally, I think it is prejudice, not scapegoating.
Thanks for your entry!
i agree with L.V. Anh in the item 1 and 2.
Trả lờiXóai think the item 3 is bias as assumption, because the author has no authentic evidence, she just used the personal knowledge to come to conclusion: "các bạn đến và lấy đi hết những người con trai Hà Nội". In addition, she claimed that the girls from rural provinces " khôn hơn, khéo hơn, đảm hơn" compared with the Hanoi girls.
In teh item 2, i think that in this narrow specific picture it is just prejudice (because there is no real action of bias here
Trả lờiXóai agree with items 1$ 3 in your entry.
Trả lờiXóaitem 2: i also think it is prejudice because many people think that but it is no longer true
