ENTRY 4: Argument Structures and Fallacies
ITEM 1: Knorr advertisement
Little boy:Thịt gì mà ngon ngon thế?
Little girl: Xin đáp rằng thịt thăn xương ống.
Little boy: Nhưng sao mà nó lại ngon?
Little girl: Xin thưa vì đó là phần ngon nhất của con heo.
Mother: Hạt gì mà nêm ngon thế?
The children: Xin đáp rằng hạt nêm Knorr.
Mother: Nhưng sao mà nó lại ngon? Xin thưa bởi vì từ thịt thăn xương ống mà ngon.
Father: Còn canh gì là canh ngon nhất?
The children: Xin đáp rằng là canh mẹ nấu.
Father: Nhưng sao mà nó lại ngon?
The children+ Father: Xin thưa bởi vì mẹ nấu canh với Knorr.

ANALYSIS: It is a valid but not sound argument

The argument:
             Mother cooks the soup with Knorr seasonings
             Knorr seasonings is made from pork loin bone-in
             Pork loin bone-in is a pig’s most delicious part of meat.
           ________________________________________________
            Mother’s soup is the tastiest dish

~~~> CONTENT FALLACY: fallacy of presumption (lack of premises)
Only the Knorr seasonings is not sufficient to make a good dish of soup are not just. The taste of the soup is also influenced by its kinds of ingredients (for example vegetables, spices, etc) and the process of cooking. Therefore, although the structure of the argument is valid, the conclusion that using Knorr seasonings can make the Mother’s soup the most delicious ever is not convincing, and sound.
ITEM 2: “MAGGI 3 ngọt” advertisement
Ớt nào mà ớt chẳng cay
Gái nào mà gái chẳng hay ghen chồng
Ghen chồng là bởi thương chồng
Ớt cay, canh ngọt, đượm nồng bên nhau
MAGGI 3 ngọt ngon canh
Gia đình hòa thuận, ngọt lành yêu thương
Nấu ăn ngon cũng như chăm sóc gia đình
Luôn cần những gì ngọt ngào nhất
MAGGI 3 ngọt-ngọt như tình yêu thương
ANALYSIS:  It is a valid but not sound argument
CONTENT FALLACY:
1.     Fallacy of relevance (weak analogy):
Ớt nào mà ớt chẳng cay
Gái nào mà gái chẳng hay ghen chồng
 Ghen chồng là bởi thương chồng
Ớt cay, canh ngọt, đượm nồng bên nhau”
~~> Although it is undeniable that chili is always spicy and women are usually jealous wives, mentioning those facts together does not prove anything. Actually, there is not a single relationship between chili and women.
2.     Fallacy of necessary and sufficient of conditions:
The argument:
Well-cooked dishes make a family happy
Using MAGGI will enable to make tasty dishes
_________________________________________
Therefore, the family will be happy.
In term of structure, the argument is valid. However, the 1st premise is not very persuasive. Actually, a wife with good cooking skills is just a necessary condition, not a sufficient one, to make a happy family.
  3. Hi. I am in agreement with Thuy and Hue that your entry is really interesting. You find simple but worth analzing items
    However,you can still improve it:
    Item 1: i think there is circular argument:why is pork loin bone-in delicious? Because it is the most delicious part of pig". That's funny!Moreover, you said that the argument is valid, but it lacks premise,so I think you should reconsider it.:D
